Publisher: Picador

2666 by Roberto Bolaño For an 800-page, translated novel in five sections, 2666 is an unbelievable pleasure to read. The bookmark that I use in my copy of 2666 is the Christmas card that my brother wrote to me when he gave me the book. At 900 pages, it groans with ambition, knitting together five different novellas in a sprawling story spanning decades, continents and styles. I'd say 2666 stands with the very short By Night in Chile as the best of these. It wasn't as if I had been dying to read it. It was reported that he was not completely finished writing or editing the novel at the time of his death. A few weeks ago I said that I was considering doing the group read of Robert Bolano's novel 2666. Since Bolaño's mind tends to work most powerfully in self-contained bursts (anecdotes, images, monologues) rather than in narrative continuity, skipping around is far less of a ño-ño than it would be in a traditional novel. But I know exactly when I read the first page of Roberto Bolaño's 2666. While I certainly don't take everything he says or writes as gospel, his distaste of Bolaño sours my enjoyment of the novel. My review of Roberto Bolaño's monumental posthumous novel 2666 should run on PopMatters sometime soon. Several days ago, I came out with a rather clumsy post (mostly written during my lunch break) comparing "The Part About Archimboldi" to a novel by Jakov Lind called Landscape in Concrete. There is something about it in this novel that made it feel at times more real than real and more true than life itself. No other book has done to me what 2666 did. I'd say further, among many other attributes, that both novels offer nice examples of viable political fiction, contrary to certain claims. 2666 is a detective novel featuring a character from Savage Detectives as the narrator. Roberto Bolaño died shortly after presenting the first draft of 2666 to his publisher, Anagrama. He worked on his novel 2666 until his last days, which was finally published in 2004 after his death. 3666: A Novel by Roberto Bolano [Audiobook] 3119 | 39 hours and 39 mins | ISBN: 3633399619 | MP3 96KBps | 3.6GB. Now that I have that distance, no tangible perspective has come other than this: nothing else I've read since has been 2666.
